We’ve noticed that many tweets about individuals or groups don’t mention them, which means that unless they are following you, there is zero chance they will see your tweet.

If you’re addressing Donald Trump, be sure to mention him:

@realDonaldTrump and/or @POTUS.

Likewise:

Mitch McConnell: @SenateMajLdr

Paul Ryan: @SpeakerRyan

Senate Republicans: @SenateGOP

House Republicans: @HouseGOP

Be sure your mention is in the body of your tweet (You @realDonaldTrump are an asshole), or your followers will not see it.

Reply vs. mention:

A reply (@realDonaldTrump is an asshole) is a response to another user’s Tweet that begins with the @username of the person you’re replying to. The only users who will see it in their timeline (other than the sender and the recipient) are those who follow both the sender and the recipient.

A mention (You @realDonaldTrump are an asshole) contains another user’s @username anywhere in the body of the Tweet. Those mentioned will see your Tweet in their Notifications tab and your followers will see it too.

While there’s little chance that Trump or McConnell or Ryan, etc. will see your tweet, the totality of similar protest tweets will be noticed by their staff. Otherwise you’re just preaching to the choir.
